BIOGRAPHY
Nadia Marie Johnson is a second-year doctoral student in the Department of Communication at the 国产福利资源 Her research and teaching interests include Black studies, critical media and cultural studies, and digital media studies coupled with women's, gender, and sexuality studies. Nadia Marie is particularly interested in Black people's media representation and how race- and gender-based discriminatory practices impact our perceptions and understanding of the Black experience. Her research also focuses on how these media representations affect Black folks' livelihoods from various perspectives, such as their socioeconomic status. Nadia Marie is currently immersed in the concept of "HBCU pride" and how it is digitally communicated by students and alumni of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). She seeks to understand the various aspects of HBCU pride and its cultural presence, effectiveness, and significance in modern society. Nadia Marie draws inspiration from her experiences in girlhood and daily life to shape her research and to bring a passionate approach to topics relative to the field of communication.
Nadia Marie earned a B.A. in Communication Arts ('22) from Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU), Charlotte, North Carolina's only HBCU, and an M.A. in Communication with a Graduate Concentration in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies ('24) from Wake Forest University. Aside from her studies, she has served as a student leader, founded two JCSU student support groups, Bullooming and Transfer Student Association, and has received funding to participate in a solo study abroad program. Nadia Marie is a proud member of the illustrious Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., where she remains committed to local and global service, and Lambda Pi Eta, exhibiting her commitment to communication scholarship.
Nadia Marie is a recipient of 国产福利资源's University Graduate Fellowship. She was also recently awarded the 2024-2025 Graduate Teaching Assistant Outstanding Teacher Award by the Department of Communication.
